Assignment #3: Promising Practices Project (250 points)

  1. You will be working with a team ranging from 2 to 4 members. You will be researching promising practices initiatives designed to improve the educational operation/outcomes of your organization/school.
  2. Review professional journals and the Internet to determine promising practices currently being discussed in the literature. Identify the major players in the field.
  3. Develop an action plan for implementation in your organization/school (classroom, grade, building, etc). Your plan of action should reflect elements of collaboration, while being compatible with the principles of brain-based learning, and the theories of Multiple Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence. It should include the following:
    • A description of the promising practice you would like to implement;
    • A 3-5 page research paper reviewing the current literature regarding the promising practice you have chosen, including origin, basic principles, and an example application in the field;
    • The name, contact information, and cost of a leading speaker on the subject;
    • A description of how the promising practice is supported by the brain-based learning principles, Multiple Intelligences theory and/or Emotional Intelligence theory;
    • A list of people and groups who would be involved in the design, implementation and evaluation of the proposed practice;
    • A written explanation of a Promising Practices Workshop, including an activity with handouts. Workshop should introduce the concepts of the practice as well as give participants an opportunity to apply skills learned;
    • Evaluation instruments to determine effectiveness of the workshop, as well as the overall implementation of the practice in your organization/school;
    • and a media piece introducing the project to the community. Examples might include newspaper press release, a brochure, radio spot, video for television broadcast, posters, etc.

The presentation to the class should be completed in PowerPoint. These will be shared in class on the last day. The research paper and PowerPoint presentation must be submitted in both electronic and print versions. Electronic versions can be turned in, emailed as attachments, or submitted through the Blackboard dropbox. Be sure that all group members' names are included. The project will be instructor, peer and self-evaluated.
