Contingencies Plan
Details:

The student is expected to go through the posted class notes and PowerPoint slides. The student should also read the appropriate material in the text book, as well as try the suggested practice problems. After each chat session a project will be posted to be completed and submitted to the instructor. During chat sessions we will go through and work out sample problems in the PowerPoint slides. The student is expected to try the problems and participate in the chat session.

Missed Chat: If you cannot attend a chat session you must e-mail the instructor the answers to the questions posed in the PowerPoint Slides to receive credit for the chat session. This e-mail must be received before the chat session is scheduled. In the case of an emergency absence the instructor is to be contacted as soon as possible after the missed chat session. In either case, the instructor must be informed of the reason for the absence.

Canceled Chat: If for some unforeseen reason a chat session is unable to take place because of technical difficulties, students should try again to get into the chat session 30 minutes after the time the chat session was to start. If we are still unable to get into the chat session then all students are to e-mail the instructor the answers to the questions posed in the PowerPoint slides that would have been covered by the chat session. This should be submitted by noon the Monday following the canceled chat session.

Projects and Quizzes: Nine days after each chat session the project over material covered in that session and the quiz over that material is due. The quizzes will be on-line and must be completed by 7:00 p.m. Specific due dates are indicated in the course schedule.

Rationale:

"BE FLEXIBLE!!! There are always going to be students who encounter technical problems. They can range from power outages, internet outages, crashed computers etc. Since students taking on-line classes are most likely at home, you have a single parent who has a sudden emergency with a child. There are always the times when our web site goes down so students don't know how to get into BlackBoard (if that server is even up). If you give on-line quizzes and tests, be aware that you may have to reset them for some students who encounter technical problems."

Plan before the class starts how you will handle a 'lost chat session'."
