Active Learning Design Guidelines
Category 3: Active Learning Design
Principle: Giving students choices and engaging students in application activities-case studies, journal writing, role playing, problem-solving, and class discussions- encourages active learning (ownership) and continual involvement with course content.
Baseline Expectation
Indicators: (At least 3 of the following activities that promote active learning)
- Topic choices
- Role playing
- Problem-solving (examples: Diagnose your patient, physical examination)
- Online discussion/interaction tied to a portion of the grade
- Asynchronous
- Synchronous
- File sharing
- Case study (examples: the basketball coach, the lesbian couple, head lice, distribution of supplies)
- Journal writing
- Group work
- Critical thinking (examples: website evaluation, write to your legislator)
