Chapter 3

Setup a Discussion Board

As a suggestion, your next step might include the creation of a Discussion Board forum asking students to introduce themselves. Before students can post in the Discussion Board, instructors must create a "forum" or topic students can respond to.

Online Exercise

To Use the Discussion Board:

  • From the Course Tools area of the Control Panel, click "Discussion Boards."
  • Click the "Add Forum" button in the upper left corner.
  • Create a name for the forum (e.g., Intoduce Yourself) and add a brief description paragraph in the text box below.
  • Select the settings you wish to use for the Discussion Board. We recommend instructors de-select the "Allow Anonymous Posts" option to avoid or reduce the likelihood of users posting inappropriate material.
  • Click "Submit" to save your changes in Blackboard.
  • Click "OK" to acknowledge the receipt of your changes.
  • Click "OK" or use the breadcrumb trail to return to the Control Panel.

You will now see a gray box with a link titled "Introduce Yourself." Users click on the link to enter that forum (or topic). Instructors or students can then click the "Add New Thread" button in the upper left corner of the screen to make a post. A "New Thread" refers to a new response to a current forum. Go ahead and create the first thread!
