ATS Team:

Dr. Raymond J. McCandless
Professor of Political Science & Public Administration
Director, Academic Technology Services

ext. 4565 or mccandless@findlay.edu

Dr. McCandless began teaching at the University of Findlay in 1980. His main focus has been the instruction of and writing about political science, but over the years, he has also been involved in a variety of instructional and faculty development initiatives. Dr. McCandless was drawn to the work of Academic Technology Services because of its mission as a faculty development resource for the UF campus and the Teaching, Learning & Technology Center's commitment to the enhancement of good teaching practices and innovation. His work as Director of Academic Technology Services allows Dr. McCandless to assist his colleagues in the exciting venture of connecting new ideas on teaching/research with actual project development, implementation, and assessment.

"I see my work in the area of Academic Technology Services (ATS) as a way of continuing the tradition of the collegial sharing of teaching ideas, curriculum/program development strategies, and research endeavors. It is an extraordinary privilege to provide the UF community with innovative and useful means to turn great ideas into classroom and professional development reality."

Ms. Mimi Chan
Academic Technology Specialist: Blackboard
chan@findlay.edu

Ms. Chan received her B.S. degree in Business Computer Information Systems at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business. In 2004, she completed her Masters Degree in Information Science at Indiana University. Her interests lie in utilizing computer technologies to advance computer-based education and training, along with digital information delivery and organization.

"As I start my first year with UF, I look forward to meeting and working with the faculty, staff, and students here. I believe there are many unique opportunities to be involved with, including improving current Blackboard services while helping to implement new Blackboard modules."

Mr. Denny Coughlan
Academic Technology Specialist: Blackboard
ext. 5513 or coughlan@findlay.edu

Mr. Coughlan brings a wealth of academic and professional experience to his work with faculty members in the area of quality online instruction. His prior positions teaching chemistry and physics at the high school and university level, as well as serving the teaching profession as a Labor Relations Consultant for the Ohio Educational Association, as the Technology Coordinator for Putnam County Educational Center, and grant administrator for the National Center for Excellence in Environmental Management, lend credibility to his current position of UF Blackboard Administrator. He manages the online instructional environment for The University of Findlay with attention to detail, with an eye to the future and always with the faculty member and their students in the forefront of his attention.

"With the advent of the computer age and the attendant exponential growth of human knowledge, life long learning is really here...now. It is therefore imperative that tools, devices or methods used in the teaching/learning process be readily accessible (anytime and anywhere), engaging and easy to use. The TLTC staff is dedicated to helping faculty bring that version to reality."

Mr. Jens Hatch
Academic Technology Specialist: Multimedia
ext. 5944 or hatch@findlay.edu

Mr. Hatch received a B.S.T. in Visual Communications Technology from Bowling Green State University in 2001. He began his work with Academic Technology Services at the TLTC in the fall of 2001. Mr. Hatch works with faculty interested in enhancing their teaching by using still and video images. He is responsible for training and educating on the use and implementation of technology tools.

"I love the opportunity to watch faculty make headway in their professional development and creation of classroom materials, no matter how small the progress may be. It is a joy to meet different faculty and learn about what they do. This gives me the opportunity to introduce them to new technology tools that they might not have otherwise considered using.

Dr. Corey Lee
Academic Technology Specialist: Instructional Design
ext. 4149 or clee@findlay.edu

Dr. Lee obtained an M.S. in Instructional Technology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1999. Upon the completion of his master's program, Dr. Lee attended the University of Central Florida and received a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with an emphasis on Instructional Systems Design. Dr. Lee began his work for Academic Technology Services at the TLTC in August 2003.

"I enjoy working with faculty members in order to introduce advanced technology into the design of their teaching materials. Throughout my doctoral studies, I was particularly interested in online instruction and student motivation. What excites me the most is helping UF faculty bring their innovative teaching ideas to life either online or in the classroom."

Ms. Beth Stewart
TLTC Coordinator
ext. 4538 or stewart@findlay.edu

Ms. Stewart's professional experience in training and development within corporate cultures has proved to be exceptionally valuable to the work of Academic Technology Services. Beth is responsible for managing technology tools and their maintenance in TLTC, maintaining budgetary work, and scheduling courses for training and appointments for mentoring. Beth is the first person a faculty member has contact with when they request support from the TLTC. Beth is always available with a friendly, personal phone conversation or meeting to learn of their needs and connect them with the proper ATS staff member.

"Our support staff at the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center provides wonderful resources for faculty to learn and incorporate new ideas into their classroom teaching, both traditional and online. We provide a relaxed, casual environment for faculty to experiment with new technology "toys", work with staff on individual projects, or just come and have a cup of coffee. I enjoy being able to help faculty members meet their needs."

Mr. Scott Trimmer
Academic Technology Specialist: Technical Support
ext. 4150 or trimmer@findlay.edu

Mr. Trimmer began working for The University of Findlay in August 2003 for Academic Technology Services. He has combined his five years of working for Oberlin College's Center for Information Technology and his degree in Computer Science to provide a friendly, helpful, technical resource to the faculty here at UF.

"In my previous job I spent all day working on computers, with very little human interaction. Working for Academic Technology Services at the TLTC gives me the opportunity to not only work with technology, but also to interact with the faculty. Few things brighten up my day more than explaining a simple technical concept to a faculty member, and seeing the 'light-bulb' moment. The excitement is contagious.

Ms. Cheryl Cape (half-time)
Senior Lecturer, College of Sciences
Academic Technology Specialist: Faculty Liaison
ext. 4817 or cape@findlay.edu

Ms. Cape has been affiliated with The University of Findlay as a part-time faculty member since 1992. She began her work for Academic Technology Services in September 2002 as Faculty Liaison and Academic Technology Specialist. With strong technical skills from years as a professional earth scientist, plus her teaching experience, Cheryl helps faculty to integrate technology with their teaching methods in appropriate and useful ways.

"My work at the TLTC has been a logical continuation of years of helping colleagues with technology. Even in graduate school, I was viewed as a "go to" person who could explain technology to novice technology users and content to technology experts. I thrive on the exciting cross-disciplinary environment here at The University of Findlay, and enjoy helping our faculty experiment with new ideas and innovative technology."

Mr. Brian Reynard
Academic Technology Specialist: Multimedia Specialist/Graphic Designer

Mr. Reynard received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in the Digital Arts Program at Bowling Green State University. He began work with the TLTC in the summer of 2004. Brian primarily reviews and critiques Academic Technology Services materials for aesthetic and visual communicative capability as well as assisting the ATS/TLTC staff in assigned special projects.

"Artistically I gravitate towards chaos with an underlying order. My artwork generally consists of a rigid, meticulously built architectural structure created within a 3D application, which is then systematically torn apart and frozen in tension. My work here is the opposite, and is just as interesting to me. I start with a given idea/concept from the TLTC and try and present it with a strict emphasis on order and usability contained within a clean, streamlined presentation.

Mr. Noah Kreischer
Blackboard Resource Manager and Trainer
kreischern@findlay.edu

Mr. Kreischer is currently working towards undergraduate degrees in International Business Management, with a planned graduation date of May 2005. Noah began his work at the TLTC in the summer of 2002 as a student coach, where he assisted instructors with the integration of technology into their teaching and curriculum. He now specializes in the use of Blackboard, the University's online learning tool, and serves the faculty as a trainer and support specialist for the use of the online system.

"I really enjoy being able to help and train the faculty on the use of Blackboard. I believe that by helping the faculty use Blackboard more easily and efficiently, I am doing my small part to make our University grow and become a major innovator of higher education."
